Parenting Help and Hope in Parenting Workshop 2…

What if you could teach responsibility without losing your child’s love? Would that bring Hope? Our next parenting workshop on April 28th at 6:00 p.m. is going to equip parents to learn:

  • How to help kids learn from their mistakes rather than repeating them.
  • What to do when you can’t think of a logical consequence.
  • How to discipline children without losing their love.

Pray for another great evening with parents and grandparents! Being equipped in practical, life-giving skills brings hope!

Bridge Street Boys advance schedule several months!

Bridge Street House of Prayer purchased an Adult Gift Store and Liquor Store that they are transforming into places of ministry in north Grand Rapids. GLCC’s Men’s Service Team has been helping with that transformation and on March 20, Tom DeVries, Tom Hopkins, Doug Root, Bill TerAvest, Bill Hall and Dick Hoving headed back to town. They took down the ceiling on the 1st floor to make sure that it was structurally sound. They finished taking the interior plaster and lath walls out. And finally, they picked up all the trash, wood, and plaster putting it outside the building for pick up.

A couple weeks later, on Monday April 1, Bob Duthler, Ed Hoogstra, Doug Clark, and Bill Hall’s grandson Luke Walker joined the rest of the guys to do the complete demo of apartments on the 2nd floor. It is amazing what can be accomplished when people come together to get a dirty job done. Ryan, the Director of Bridge Street House of Prayer expressed that the work accomplished has advanced their renovation schedule by several months!

If you want to be a Bridge Street Boy or to help with other Men’s Serve Team projects, email Dick Hoving at hovingjr@gmail.com. There is always room on the team!

Where is God calling you to bring hope by lending a helping hand? Maybe it is helping your neighbor with Spring clean-up or helping someone get after a project that seems overwhelming when it is just one person. We can all join in the fun!

Winterfest Breakfast Supports Area Fire Departments…!

The Gun Lake Area celebration called “Winterfest” happens every February. As a part of the winter fun weekend, a breakfast to support local firefighters is held at Gun Lake Community Church. Many church members and firefighters help to put on the event, cooking the food and serving the breakfast.

It is estimated that 280 people came for breakfast and $1,251.00 was raised to support both Yankee Springs/Wayland and Orangeville fire departments! Thanks to all who attended and all who served for supporting the hope that comes when fire or emergency responds to difficult circumstances in our region. It is great to be in partnership with our greater community!

Where is God calling you to be a part of good things that are happening in your community? Join the fun as together we bring hope in many different ways and with many different partners to the Gun Lake Region.

Hope Grows on Middle School Winter Retreat…!

Understanding your identity in Christ is super important. Understanding who God is in His love and character is too! Eighteen Middle School students plus leaders got to grow in both through a winter weekend retreat at Spring Hill this past month. They met God through energetic worship, impacting messages, and interacting with other teens and each other through fun activities and cabin time. These kinds of opportunities create memories that serve as reminders of God’s love and goodness. It also gives our students a chance to express their love for God and to learn to hear His voice in a positive, life-giving environment far away from home. Then they have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in their families, schools, and together at youth group on Sunday evenings.

Pray that the excitement and joy experienced on Winter Retreat continues to grow in our Middle School students. Their lives alive in Christ bring hope everywhere they go!

Hope can come in “Incredible” Ways…!

Last Friday evening, kids, parents, and grandparents had an “incredible” time as they ate popcorn, sipped on juice boxes, and soaked up the movie “The Incredibles 2” in the fellowship area of church. Super heroes were in full force all over the room and fun was had by all.

Events like these are everybody friendly and bring hope to others through fun, fellowship, and connecting families of faith with families in the community.

Your next opportunity is Easterfest on Saturday, April 20th , for games, hot dogs, and an awesome Easter Egg Hunt! Who does God want you to invite to join in the fun?

After all, bringing hope to others is always “Incredible”!

Hope steps into the Allegan County Jail…!

Two years ago, Carol De Boer began feeling a nudge towards Forgotten Man Ministries. She and her husband Bill would pass by it every time they drove up north to go camping. The nudge was to see if they had a women’s program and if she might be able to volunteer in her retirement. But the connection never quite happened until… she attended the church organization service of the Gun Lake Church plant in Allegan called “The Bridge”. Guess who was there?

Yep. You got it. The Area Director of Forgotten Man Ministries and an active Chaplain for Forgotten Man Ministries in the Allegan County Jail, Sarah Lindstrom. Well, ideas were shared and emails exchanged but things stalled for several months until… Carol was representing GLCC at our classis meetings this past Fall. At the meetings, she and Sarah were able to reconnect again and this time the timing was just right. Chaplain Sarah took Carol’s idea and shared it with the officers at the Allegan County Jail in charge of volunteer programming whom she happened to be meeting with the next week! They loved the idea. And now Carol is combining one of her passions with bringing hope to others. Carol’s passion…? Crocheting.

Two times a month, Carol goes into the Allegan County Jail to help inmates complete community service by learning to crochet. They donate the items they are making to local service agencies. One of the days, Carol meets with women and the other day, with men. Through sharing her passion of crocheting, Carol also gets a chance to bring hope through showing God’s love to those that she is teaching.  She asks for your prayers for the women and men that are there. How awesome is that?

How is God calling you to bring His hope and love through your passions? It might just start with a nudge…

Celebrating Nine Years of Hope through Samaritan’s Kitchen…

Over nine years ago, Vicki Totten cast a vision of providing a warm meal for people in the Gun Lake Region. Ardie Clark was looking for something fulfilling to do in retirement. She was grabbed by Vicki’s vision, as were many others, and Samaritan’s Kitchen was born. They had a practice launch on January 26, 2010, and opened the doors to the community on February 2, 2010, on Ground Hog’s Day. They have now been operating for over nine years!

It took a lot of preparation to get Samaritan’s Kitchen launched. They met with the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission to learn more about feeding people from the community, had to find out all the rules from the Health Department for running the kitchen, and needed many volunteers to help it all happen. A great group of cooks emerged and ample volunteers have served for years making this meal a huge success. Even now over 77 volunteers are helping Samaritan’s Kitchen happen year after year.

While the meal started in a down economy to meet those who needed a meal, it quickly began to meet other needs in the community as well. Samaritan’s Kitchen, not only provides a meal for those without food, it also provides a break for the working mom, a place of belonging for people who are lonely or have lost a spouse and don’t want to eat alone, and a place of connection, community, and love for many across our area. Each week people are joyfully greeted, wonderfully served, and prayer requests are received so that special needs can be lifted in prayer.

All of these things bring hope to people! Thanks Samaritan’s Kitchen for making a difference in our region. Thank you for your faithfulness through many years. May the Lord strengthen your hands, fill your hearts with joy, and bless your families for all that you have done and continue to do.

Where is God calling you to bring hope by filling a need or serving? Join the fun! There are many ways you can make a difference at Gun Lake Community Church and beyond.
