Hope Weekly is Asking God to Rock the House!

John and Peter had just spent the night in jail, been dragged before the most important people in their culture, and commanded to never speak or teach in the name of Jesus ever again! All of this happened because they had healed a lame beggar in Jesus’ name on their way into the temple. Upon their release, they quickly went to other believers and shared what had been said to them. How they were threatened not to teach or speak or heal in the name of Jesus. And what did the believers do? They prayed. But not just any prayers, they prayed directly into the threats that they had just received. Here is part of the prayer as it is recorded in Acts 4:29-30:

“Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

They prayed together with one heart and one voice. And what happened when they were done praying? Verse 31 describes the scene:

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

God answered their prayers by rocking the house and giving them the very thing that they were asking for. They stepped forward from that place and spoke and taught about Jesus and ministered healing in His name with great boldness.

We are coming together as a church this Saturday and Sunday during our ONE Day of Prayer event. The church will be open for 24 hours starting at noon on Saturday and finishing with our 9 and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Sunday. You can come any time. We come together recognizing that one of the greatest threats we face is a culture that is constantly tempting us away from God and off mission. In the face of that threat, we are asking God to help us live out the 3-dimensional life of Jesus, UP – IN – OUT.

As individuals we are praying:
“Lord, make me ONE who loves you with all my heart (UP), who loves my brothers and sisters in Christ like you do (IN), and who loves the world like you do (OUT).”

As families we are praying:
“Lord, make my family ONE that loves you with all our heart (UP), who loves our brothers and sisters in Christ like you do (IN), and who loves the world like you do (OUT).”

And as a church we are praying:
“Lord, make our church ONE that loves you with all our heart (UP), who loves our brothers and sisters in Christ like you do (IN), and who loves the world like you do (OUT).”

As we lift up these prayers together, I know that the Lord is going to meet us. He might even decide to rock the house! But most importantly, may He empower us as individuals, families, and as a church to live out boldly the 3-dimensional life of Jesus, UP – IN – OUT. A church living out their faith in that way will bring incredible hope to the region! God bless you.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit!” Romans 15:13

Backpacks! Backpacks! Back to School Backpacks!

Hope comes when parents see their kids have what they need for school. Hope comes when kids are equipped to learn. Hope comes when loving people hear of a need and respond to fill it!

Hope Weekly celebrates the 78 backpacks and school supplies that were donated from July 14 through August 11 at the Children’s Check-in! The backpacks covered students from Elementary School, Middle School , and High School ages. The backpacks were evenly dispersed between the Orangeville Community Outreach, the Martin Resource Center, and Project Hope in Dorr.

Way to go church! Hope is growing in our region. Thanks for being a part of it!

Hope Weekly celebrates Heritage Days in Middleville!

Last weekend the Village of Middleville celebrated 185 years with their annual Heritage Days Weekend! Gun Lake Community Church joined forces with other area churches for the third year to help provide Kids World, a fun area with games and experiences for kids and their families. Leighton UMC offered old fashioned games. Middleville UMC provided the corn box for younger kids to dig for prizes. TVC gave out water and treats to keep kids cool. Journey Church ran a Children’s Scavenger Hunt with prizes and provided a hair braiding and coloring station. Middleville CRC had arts and crafts. GLCC oversaw a Family Scavenger Hunt and joined with the First Baptist Church to provide face painting. Every family that participated in the scavenger hunt received $25 to use towards their back to school expenses. Many people were really surprised and happy. When churches come together to bless their community, beautiful things happen and hope multiplies. Join us in praying that God continues to open partnerships with churches and many other organizations to restore hope to the Gun Lake Region. Have a great week!

Hope Comes through Rolling on the River!

Sometimes hope comes with helpful hands. Sometimes hope comes through answered prayer. And sometimes hope comes from simply rolling on the river.

There is something restorative about getting out in God’s creation and getting away from everyday life. Cell phones are packed away and the hustle of the city and towns fade into the distance. The lists of everything that we want to get done get put aside…and we breathe…breathe in the fresh air…the water…the sunshine…and the fellowship of brothers, young and old.

Twenty four guys got to experience the peace that comes when you step away from hectic lives and stick a paddle in the water as they kayaked down the Thornapple River last Saturday. Three others joined them for a great meal over an open fire at the landing spot.

All them enjoyed connecting with God and each other in creation. Time well spent. Time that restores as we realize that we are not human doings but human beings!

Hope comes to us in these moments when we stop long enough to breathe…realize the goodness of God…and recognize that we are not alone. There are a lot of others paddling down the river of life with us.

Hope Weekly reminds you this week to breathe, to remember to unplug, and to experience the hope that comes when you meet God in creation and in your brothers and sisters on the journey. Until next week, God bless!

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit!” Romans 15:13

Hope Weekly Shares Testimony of Reaching Out!

Have you ever had a hankering for a certain food? Well this story begins with a man who had a yearning for a real “Sonoran-style” chimichanga like he used to get at Bitzee Mama’s in Glendale, AZ (now my taste buds are watering!). But Bitzee Mama’s is a little far away from Michigan so his son made a suggestion that they start with different Mexican Restaurants in the area and see if they could find the treasured chimichanga. Last week the man and his wife met with their son at a local restaurant to begin their journey when God opened their eyes to an opportunity right in front of them.

As they ate lunch, they were able to strike up some banter with their server. They discovered that she tried to do something nice for someone on each shift and gave an example of giving two colored pens to a couple of children whose mom really appreciated her generosity. As the conversation opened up, they learned that she was working two jobs to try to make ends meet and that her last car payment hadn’t gone through. She was facing two car payments in four days.  The family realized that God was giving them an opportunity to bring hope right in front of them.

They inquired if they could pray for her and her finances because God loved her and was more than able to help her in this way. She responded that it was very hard for her to go to church without getting anxious because three years earlier she had gotten divorced from someone who was in ministry and abusive to her. The family was so sorry that this had happened to her. They shared Psalm 147:3 with her that God “heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds”. They also got to share that the heart of Jesus is the same. They told her that God wanted to heal the broken areas of her heart and help her with her car payments because He loved her so much. The waitress was open to prayer and the family was able to pray for her needs.

Well, the son needed to leave and it was time for the couple to move on with the day, when the husband said to his wife, “I think we need to leave a $50.00 tip.” His wife said that she was thinking the same thing and the exact same amount! So they did. They are planning on going back soon to see how she is doing. I have no idea how good the chimichanga was!

How is God calling you to bring hope to someone right in front of you? Join in on the fun! We, together, are called to be a people who bring hope!

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit!” Romans 15:13

Hope Weekly has a Story to Tell!

About a month ago Ralph Newton shared with Pastor Dan that he had an awesome story to tell, a miracle even, but due to vacations and schedules, they didn’t get to meet until this week. Well Ralph didn’t disappoint and now Hope Weekly can pass the story onto you.

A little while back, Ralph’s wife Loie, gave him one of the “Jesus Calling” devotionals. Ralph is dyslexic and longer readings are very difficult. The “Jesus Calling” devotional proved to be just the right length and became a meaningful part of Ralph’s life. Then Ralph got news that an old friend and band mate named Scott was in the hospital dealing with a second leg amputation due to diabetes. Ralph went to see him and quickly realized how discouraged Scott was. He decided to give Scott his “Jesus Calling” devotional telling him to simply read the page with the day’s date on it. A couple weeks later Scott thanked him for what a difference it had made in his life. That is a cool story all by itself, but there is more!

Scott has a daughter named Sarah who works with people who are trying to get out of addiction. In particular, she was working with two younger women who were trying to step away from cocaine, meth, and heroin. Well, the two women went missing. Sarah tried to find out where they were and finally was able to contact them. They had hitched a ride in an open car on a cargo train to Florida! While in Florida, the two women ran into members of a satanic church that wanted them to join in with them. Sarah urged them to leave immediately and come back to Michigan which they did. Through Sarah’s working with these women, Ralph’s friend Scott also became connected to them. One of the women had outstanding bench warrants in Michigan and he encouraged her to get that right as a part of getting right with God. As a part of his encouragement, Scott gave her a Bible and the “Jesus Calling” devotional. She had to go to court the next day and he told her to read the day’s date and trust God. It just so happened that one of the verses in the devotional was Revelation 2:10 which says:

“Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.”

The young woman went to her court date and the maximum sentence she could receive was 120 days in jail. Her defense lawyer argued for 90 days in jail saying that she was making efforts to turn her life around. The prosecuting attorneys asked for the maximum of 120 days because of her outstanding warrants. What would the judge do?

The judge gave her 10 days in jail.

The young woman was immediately escorted out to go to jail when they stopped and she said, “I want my Bible.” She also told Sarah to tell her Dad (Scott) that he was right. The ten days in jail were harder than what she thought they would be, but she made it through and now she is released and learning to beat cocaine, meth, and heroin while learning to love and follow Jesus. Ralph’s friend Scott called Ralph up and said “I was just a part of a miracle and it was all because of that devotional you gave me.” Ralph told him that it was all God and that he only played a small part.

Wow. Hope that story moved you. One small obedience bringing so much hope!

How is the Lord asking you to trust Him and take a step of obedience? Where and how is He calling you to bring hope to others? Listen for the Holy Spirit’s leading and join the fun! You never know what might happen through it.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit!” Romans 15:13

Hope Weekly Remembers the 500…

Hope comes in many ways to people in our region, but the greatest hope of all is to know God’s love through Jesus Christ. During the message series “REACH” at Gun Lake Community Church, we all had the opportunity to write down names that we wanted to come into relationship with Jesus. The total number of names written down was right about five hundred. Five hundred neighbors, friends, family members, or co-workers who have not yet experienced the hope that comes from knowing that they are forgiven, set free, and eternally loved by their Heavenly Father through His Son. Hope Weekly asks you to remember the five hundred in your prayers, but more than that, be light and joy and encouragement and life to those around you in Jesus’ name! You never know when you might be rubbing shoulders with one of them.

Prayer Walking Delton brings Hope…

This past Monday evening ten followers of Jesus followed Him out into the community of Delton to bless the community and pray for any needs that came up. Here is some of what happened:

  • A team encountered a young couple that was restoring and renovating their own home while also redoing a home across the street to sell. Because of their efforts, others were improving their own homes in the immediate neighborhood. The young couple was excited but also stressed out because of the amount of work. They were so happy to receive prayer for the sale of the house and God’s favor on their own hard work.
  • Another team entered Family Fare Grocery Store and encountered several people who had prayer requests that were prayed over. One even waited patiently watching a person get prayed over and when the prayer finished said “What about me? I need prayer too.” God kept bringing divine encounters throughout the night through all of the teams involved.
  • Several teams prayed over the businesses in Delton and asked God for favor in having good businesses open in vacant buildings. The neighborhoods were also walked blessing each home and church that was encountered as well as the schools.

We are people of hope! Whether through prayer or sharing the good news of God’s love through Jesus, let us be eager to share hope all around the Gun Lake Region. Join in on the fun!

Hope walks and drives the streets of Wayland!

On Monday evening June 24, ten believers met at the Wayland City Park to prayer walk or drive the community. They paired up into 5 teams of two, 3 teams drove while 2 teams walked. Here is what happened:

  • One team drove to every school in Wayland asking God’s blessing on kids, teachers, administration, and support staff. Additional prayers were offered at Baker Elementary where Gun Lake Community Church partners with Hand2Hand Ministry.
  • While walking, a team came upon an older woman and two young adults. The team was able to celebrate with the older woman that she is cancer free and 42 years free from any addictions. The team was able to bless the young adults for lives that were full of life and hopeful futures. It was a wonderful time.
  • Another team drove the city limits of Wayland asking God’s blessing and protection over the city. Prayers of hope and asking God’s love to be known in Wayland were shared.
  • While walking up to Hardings Market, another team encountered a woman who was just getting out of her car and seemed a little distressed. They lovingly engaged her and found out that she was a single mom whose boyfriend had just suffered a relapse into addiction. As they asked her if they could pray for her, she began to cry and said that she absolutely needed it. She couldn’t believe the timing of the encounter and was so grateful.
  • Another team drove just outside the city limits in the country. They were led to pray for the area farmers, for God’s blessing on the crops (especially with the late planting), and for a strong harvest in the Fall. They asked for God’s provision, strength, and guidance for farmers throughout the area.

God created us to be a people of hope! Because His love is inside of us, we can overflow with hope to others. How is the Holy Spirit leading you to be part of the fun? It might be as easy as loving the person who is right in front of you.

Family Promise, Barry County Cares, and More!

Because of our partnership with B2 Outlet Stores, when anyone makes a purchase at the B2 Outlet Store in Hastings, Gun Lake Community Church gets a percentage to pour back into the Gun lake Region. This allows us to multiply hope in many ways. Over the last couple of months, we were able to partner with these different organizations in bringing hope:

  1. Family Promise of Barry County, a ministry to homeless families, is up and running! Three families are currently being helped and many churches are partnering together to make this mission a success. Robin Walters from GLCC serves on their board and recently shared that one of the families should be back on their feet soon. Through B2, we were able to contribute $2,000.00 to Family Promise’s ongoing efforts. Please continue to pray for this important ministry that is in its first year, and if you want to volunteer, contact Robin or the church office and we will help get you connected.

  1. Barry County Cares is our primary partner in offering needs assistance to people who live in Barry County. They recently received $1,200.00 from our B2 partnership and continue to be vital to our region.

  1. Finally, GLCC was able to give a Hope Grant of $500.00 to the Woman’s Life Chapter 908 of the Gun Lake Region to partner in providing special beach wheelchairs for the Gun Lake State Park. These chairs are specially designed to help those with physical limitations gain access to the sand and water. We are excited for the hope that these special chairs will provide.

Hope abounds when people have hearts of compassion and choose to make a difference! How can you help bring hope every day to someone around you? It might be as simple as a warm greeting, a small encouragement, or a short prayer. Join in on the fun!

Prayer Walking Is Fun, Easy, and Brings Hope!

Beginning this Monday and then every following Monday all summer long, we have the opportunity to prayer walk (or prayer drive) through different communities in our region! Prayer walking is:

  • Fun – you get to talk and enjoy the people you are with while praying for the community.
  • Easy – you simply pray for what your eyes are seeing or what your heart is experiencing while you walk. You don’t have to pray out loud if you don’t want to but you will also learn that it really is quite easy by learning from those who will be with you. If walking is a limitation or if it is raining, some choose to prayer drive!
  • Brings Hope – Prayer walking is about blessing and loving the communities around us. We have many testimonies where God’s blessing was able to flow to others through this simple practice.

Come join the fun this Monday by meeting at 7 p.m. in the Gun Lake Community Church parking lot! Prayer changes things especially when we step into it together.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit!” Romans 15:13
