|Celebrating Nine Years of Hope through Samaritan’s Kitchen…
Over nine years ago, Vicki Totten cast a vision of providing a warm meal for people in the Gun Lake Region. Ardie Clark was looking for something fulfilling to do in retirement. She was grabbed by Vicki’s vision, as were many others, and Samaritan’s Kitchen was born. They had a practice launch on January 26, 2010, and opened the doors to the community on February 2, 2010, on Ground Hog’s Day. They have now been operating for over nine years!
It took a lot of preparation to get Samaritan’s Kitchen launched. They met with the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission to learn more about feeding people from the community, had to find out all the rules from the Health Department for running the kitchen, and needed many volunteers to help it all happen. A great group of cooks emerged and ample volunteers have served for years making this meal a huge success. Even now over 77 volunteers are helping Samaritan’s Kitchen happen year after year.
While the meal started in a down economy to meet those who needed a meal, it quickly began to meet other needs in the community as well. Samaritan’s Kitchen, not only provides a meal for those without food, it also provides a break for the working mom, a place of belonging for people who are lonely or have lost a spouse and don’t want to eat alone, and a place of connection, community, and love for many across our area. Each week people are joyfully greeted, wonderfully served, and prayer requests are received so that special needs can be lifted in prayer.
All of these things bring hope to people! Thanks Samaritan’s Kitchen for making a difference in our region. Thank you for your faithfulness through many years. May the Lord strengthen your hands, fill your hearts with joy, and bless your families for all that you have done and continue to do.
Where is God calling you to bring hope by filling a need or serving? Join the fun! There are many ways you can make a difference at Gun Lake Community Church and beyond.
